22 The Rescuing Spirit

   What is a rescuer?  A rescuer is someone who rescues people from their own responsibilities.  It can be another person’s thoughts, feelings, decisions, behaviors, growth, well-being, problems, and destiny.  They are also called enablers, co-dependents, or controllers.  The rescuer is usually not aware of what he is doing.

   There are two kinds of people who enter into “caring services,” such as law enforcement, clergy, counseling, social work, and nursing.  The first group consists of those who are truly called by God for that specific field.  The second group live by co-dependency: they have rescuing spirits.  They have to do something for others so that they will feel good about themselves.
